The Ancient Sarmatians and the „Sarmatism” in Modern Eastern Europe (the Slovak Case)

Аннотация
The paper is dedicated to the development of Sarmatism on Slovak lands in the period between the 16th and 19th centuries. At the same time the Sarmatian movement developed in Poland and on Slovak lands, which belonged to the Habsburg Empire. Sarmatism was connected with a particular interest in antiquity during the Baroque period, with the birth of Slavism and Pan-Slavism, as well as the beginnings of the national revival movement. Moreover, it was used as a historical argument to prove the laudable past of Slavs, especially Slovaks, by both groups of intelligentsia from the period of Baroque on Slovak lands: Protestants and Catholics.
