Abstrakt
The article analyzes the interwoven religious, hygienic, and patriotic discourses on meat in J.-H. Rosny’s short story "Le Végétarien". By pointing to references to eighteenth-century texts, it demonstrates that the opposition between vegetarians and meat-eaters is reinforced through the association of the former with the French and the latter with the English. The discussion highlights contexts that clarify the cultural significance of meat in the period and its connection with English national pride (as a symbol of imperial power). The interpretation of the story takes into account the relations between France and England, as well as the reciprocal ways of stereotyping the representatives of these nations through their culinary practices.
