„Przewodnik Zdrowia” i inne przedsięwzięcia Augustyna Czarnowskiego (1861–1934) na rzecz „pielęgnowania zdrowia” u schyłku XIX wieku

Abstract

This text is an attempt to supplement the knowledge about the popularizing activity of the physician and publisher Augustyn Czarnowski, who from mid-1895 published in Berlin the monthly “Przewodnik Zdrowia. Pismo poświęcone pielęgnowaniu zdrowia i Sposobowi Życia Według Praw i Wskazówek Przyrody” („Health Guide. A Journal Devoted to the Care of Health and to the Way of Life According to the Laws and Guidance of Nature”). The present analysis is based on source studies, including a content analysis of “Przewodnik Zdrowia” from the years 1895–1900, the preserved issues of which are currently available, among others, in the collections of the Jagiellonian Library. Other publications issued by Czarnowski until the end of the 19th century, which were a continuation of articles published in “Przewodnik Zdrowia”, were also examined. The analysis revealed interesting information on health, diseases, prevention, treatment, and lifestyle, as well as the original methods adopted by Czarnowski to disseminate and popularize knowledge about health.
