Maturing Toward a Healthy Heart Through the Hygiene of the Soul. On the Trilogy of Eugenia Żmijewska

Abstract
The article discusses the presence and functions of motifs related to hygiene and health in Eugenia Żmijewska’s novels "Płomyk. Z pamiętnika instytutki", "Dola", and "Serduszko. Dzieje pożycia". It analyzes the impact of these themes on the message of the trilogy, highlighting the ways in which a holistic approach to women’s health and hygiene is presented. In "Płomyk", the notion of hygiene becomes a symbol of the protagonist’s educational deficiencies, while the lack of attention from her surroundings contributes to the manifestation of somatic ailments. The introduction of doctor figures outlines the protagonist’s internal conflict, and the choice of values represented by Roman Żelwietr grants her access to maturity, symbolized by her stay in the sanatorium.
